On July 16, Bollywood filmmaker-turned-actor Farhan Akhtar’s next film “Toofaan” will be released on Amazon Prime Video. With its high-octane boxing sequences, the film promises a cinematic storm.
For his second film with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Akhtar undertook intensive training to prepare for the part of Aziz Ali aka Ajju Bhai, a goon who goes on to become a national-level boxer, after another sports-based film, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,’ in 2013.
Mrunal Thakur, who plays Dr. Ananya, Aziz’s love interest, and legendary actor Paresh Rawal, who plays Nana Prabhu, his boxing teacher, both feature in the film.
The hashtag #BoycottToofan is trending on Twitter before its release, as a portion of the internet accused the filmmakers of encouraging “Love Jihad.”

While Mrunal’s character is referred to as Dr. Pooja Shah in social media posts and on the film’s Wikipedia page, the creators insist that her name is Dr. Ananya. There’s also a song called “Ananya” in the movie.
According to Akhtar the wonderful trip that Aziz, Ananya, and Nana Prabhu are on is the driving force of Toofaan. “There is a lot that goes on. The sport serves as a background… it’s thrilling, of course; it’s cinematic, there’s adrenaline, and so on. The film’s heart, though, is in the interactions that these individuals have with one another,” the 47-year-old actor said.
Toofaan was produced by Akhtar and his Excel Entertainment co-worker Ritesh Sidhwani, as well as Mehra’s ROMP Pictures. The film is directed by Anjum Rajabali and written by Vijay Maurya. It also stars Supriya Pathak Kapur and Hussain Dalal.
