Rupali Ganguly On Being Body-Shamed
In an interview, Rupali discussed the folks who called her “moti” and “aunty”. She said, “I was 83 kg and overweight. Even my ankles eventually were unable to support my weight. When I would push my son in the pram, people would exclaim, “Arre Tu toh Monisha hai Na, kitni Moti hogayi” You feel awful although it may have been said in a very polite way. Tobh chub jaati won baat. When a friend of mine who is an actress came to see me, she said, “Are Tu toh aunty ban gayi.” You are mentally impacted by these things, and they bother you. They don’t have the right to address you as Aunty or Moti; you get to choose that.”
Rupali continued, “It’s not like I got stronger because of that time. Even after Anupamaa, I experienced age and body criticism. Yes, I have wrinkles, and I’m proud of them. Are your wrinkles obvious, are you that big, lady? Every wrinkle on my body is mine to keep. I am happy with where I am right now. I can say that, after three years with Anupamaa, I am content with who I am. Just shame your haters back; I would advise any woman going through this. Because you have the best judgment, don’t let anyone else influence you.”
Rupali also disclosed that people compare her to Gaurav Khanna. She said, “I even received comments on social media saying, Oh, she is big, she looks older than Anuj. I am, in fact, older than he is. He’s going to be 41, and I’m going to be 45, I believe. I’m pleased with it. On the show, we portray Anuj and Anupamaa as the same age. Am I not playing my part to the best of my ability? Let’s discuss my work. Please let me know if you feel that I am falling short so that I can improve. Critique and encouragement are appreciated, but if your goal is to make me look bad, that’s not acceptable.”
