The Income Tax agency raided actor Sonu Sood’s Mumbai home and a company related to him in Lucknow today. Official sources stated the Income Tax Department is surveying Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s Mumbai offices and residence in the suburbs. During the statewide lockdown last year, Sood rose to popularity by arranging cheap flights for stranded migrants to reach their homes in various areas of India. He also had a run-in with the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the alleged illegal conversion of his six-story Juhu property into a boarding house.

According to sources in the Internal Revenue Service, Sonu Sood’s company is being investigated for a recent agreement with a Lucknow-based real estate firm. A survey operation has been launched in response to charges of tax fraud in this transaction.
The tax evasion raids come just days after the actor met with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Arvind Kejriwal had named him the brand ambassador for his government’s mentorship program for school pupils in the city. Following the discussion, Sonu Sood denied that he had any ambitions to run for office with Mr. Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Though he has never expressed an interest in politics, suspicion arose following his meeting with the AAP chairman. There are rumors circulating that the actor would run in the Punjab election next year.
Many people related the tax searches to the meeting. Several politicians came in the support of Sonu Sood and criticized the raid.
Raghav Chaddha, an AAP politician, said: “An IT raid on a man as upright as Sonu Sood, a man who has been dubbed a messiah by tens of thousands of people and who has aided the poor. If a man like him can be politically targeted in a well-planned witch-hunt. It shows how insensitive and politically insecure the current leadership is.”

“I’m taken aback. I don’t think Sonu Sood can do anything unlawful because of the way he has helped lakhs of people. I don’t think he can do anything illegal because of the way he has helped lakhs of people,” Shiv Sena leader Anand Dubey stated.
