Somy Ali recalls her brief meeting with late Dilip Kumar
Recalling her brief meeting with late Dilip Kumar Sahab, Somy Ali said, “No one can even come close to what he was, even after putting in a lot of work. His grin, calm and easy-going demeanor, smile, nuanced emotions, and pauses in his performance are unrivaled. What the industry has lost will never be made up for. He was not just an actor, but also one of the most modest and compassionate people I’ve ever met. It’s heartbreaking…,” adds the actor-turned-humanitarian, who founded the non-profit No More Tears in the United States to help and empower survivors of human trafficking and domestic abuse.
Somy, a self-professed lover of the veteran actor, has seen many of his films. As a human being and a thespian, she looked up to him.
“It’s difficult to choose just one Dilip Kumar film, but if I had to, I’d say Mela is my all-time favorite. And the film’s title song, ‘Ye Zindagi Ke Mele,’ is so true for all of us,” she added.
Somy had the pleasure and honor of meeting the legend once in her life. “We only talked for a few minutes. During my time in India, he was the nicest guy I’d ever encountered. I cherish a special place in my heart for him because we were both born in Pakistan. Dilip Saab’s skill would be missed, and no one can replace him. Even though he has no formal acting instruction, his talent is inspiring. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife and family. What a colossal blunder!” she exclaims.
