Uunchai Box Office Collection: Uunchai started on a respectable note at the box office today. On the first day of its release, the film earned Rs. 1.81 crores. This is in line with expectations because an opening of between 1.50 and 2 crores was anticipated, and this is also what has been received. The figures appear better when you take into account that the movie is predominantly starring experienced performers (Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, and Boman Irani).
Despite this, given the movie’s limited release, much has been said and written about how well the box office has performed. Yes, the occupancy has indeed improved marginally as a result, but the 400+ screens where the movie has been released haven’t all had houseful shows.
Things tended to look better during the evening and nighttime performances, which is fortunate considering that the movie made more money than Goodbye, which featured the same cast (Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta) and a somewhat like premise (theme, not the subject).
The Sooraj Barjatya movie couldn’t have been released on more than 1000 screens as it stands, thus cutting that number in half was a necessity as well as a tactical choice. The actual effects of this would be felt if today’s collections doubled over the weekend’s levels or at least increased by 75%.
If that does turn out to be the case, everything would have been worthwhile. I hope that happens because the sector needs it.
Box office figures are based on projections and data from a variety of sources.
