The film’s music immediately shattered records. Writer-Director Anubhav Sinha On 20 years of Tum Bin
On completing two decades in the Hindi film industry, Anubhav Sinha said, “It was early 2000 at 3 AM I was shooting a music video for T-Series when Bhushan called. He’d just viewed another film I’d provided earlier in the day. He’d enjoyed the previous three videos in a row. ‘Sir, shall we create a film?’ he asked. We launched one with AKS eighteen months later, two weeks after Gadar’ and Lagaan. We were only able to get a total of 105 screens around the country. I remember being outside the Central Plaza cinema with our Bombay distributor, Vimal Agarwal at 6 p.m. With all his expertise, Vimal Ji remarked to the mob thronging to the box office and said, ‘Sir, ye to opening lag gayi apni’. It was ‘Tum Bin’.
He further continued saying, “Bhushan and I had no idea that night that we would be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the film. Not many films live that long no matter how big a hit. Even among those who were five years old at the time, ‘Tum Bin’ is still a popular. I’m not sure how. That was the start of a friendship with Bhushan that has progressed to the point that none of us can say how many projects we are working on together now. We’ll have to take a break and count.”
Bhushan said in response to the news, “This feels surreal. My team and I am grateful to God for a successful 20 years. From carrying on my father’s vision to creating films and continuing T-Series’ core objective as a music company. Tum Bin will always hold a special place in my heart. It not only marked my debut as a producer, but it also motivated me to pursue my goals and manage the firm. Because I trusted Anubhav’s vision and he believed in me, we were able to create a film and music that shattered records. I’m pleased we’re still working together and producing pictures that our audiences will enjoy.”
Following the success of ‘Tum Bin,’ Bhushan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha collaborated on films like ‘Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai,’ ‘Tum Bin 2,’ and the current Taapsee Pannu starer ‘Thappad.’ They’ll reunite in Hansal Mehta’s directorial debut, “Anek,” starring Ayushmann Khurrana and debutants Zahaan Kapoor and Aditya Rawal. The two even collaborated on the music promotion for Anubhav’s films such as ‘Dus,’ ‘Cash,’ and ‘Ra.One.’
