Ace filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma does magic to the films of the crime genre. His upcoming gangster movie, D Company, is about to release soon. We are expecting wonders from the film just like Satya, Company and Sarkar were. While Company and Sarkar starred big names like Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan but Satya featured a cast of people who were relative unknowns back then. Now, talking about the movie D Company, it also has a cast much similar to Satya with lesser-known faces. In a recent interview, he revealed why he likes the cast of relative unknowns more than stars. Ram Gopal Varma also revealed that earlier he would stand in queues for hours just for a glimpse of Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi.
Times When Ram Gopal Varma stood in Queues for a Glimpse of Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi
Reasoning why he doesn’t always cast stars in his movies, RGV told Bollywood Life, “When casting, the most important thing one needs to keep in mind is the believability of the character. Dawood Ibrahim was a man who at the age of 25 was almost like behind his brother, he never, upfront, pushed himself. Slowly, over the course of time, he developed that (taking centre stage and making his own decision). So, I have to keep that emotion in mind while looking at these factors during the casting process. Now, though he’s not 25, Ajay Devgn for me as an actor may be so powerful that to underplay this character would look very stupid in the film because the audience would want to see his very first shot with excitement — that’s the image he’s developed over the years, that’s what is called a star.”
He added that he was never attracted to the star system and has always wanted to watch characters in films rather than stars.
The point is, I was never attracted to the star system because of the kind of cinema I’ve made be it Shiva or Raat, (from the beginning) I’ve always wanted to see characters in films rather than known faces. Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi are the only two people I’ve had a fascination for as stars and the reason for that is I saw them when I was a nobody, I would stand in lines (for hours) to buy tickets and would see them.”
