Anurag Kashyap’s short film on Netflix India Ghost Stories (2020) has got a complaint. It is the first instance of a grievance filed since the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 in February of that year. The complaint was filed in response to a scene in which Sobhita Dhulipala’s character, the protagonist, is seen consuming the embryo from her miscarriage.
Anurag Kashyap’s short film in Netflix’s Ghost Stories in trouble
The complaint was filed on Tuesday, July 27th, and it is one of the first to be published since the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued the Information Technology Rules 2021 in February. According to the new guidelines, social media sites and streaming services must establish redress procedures to resolve viewer complaints. Many people were outraged when the new regulations were announced, calling them an attack on artistic freedom and freedom of speech.
According to sources, the complainant has objected to a scenario in which Dhulipala appears. The complaint states, “The scene is not required for the story, and if the creators wished to add such a scene, there should have been a trigger warning for women who have gone through the trauma of miscarriages.”
According to a Netflix spokesman, they have reached out to the production firm to learn more about it. “As this was a partner-managed production [RSVP Movies and Flying Unicorn Entertainment], we reached out to the production company to share the complaint.”
Before the guidelines were announced, internet news media was largely uncontrolled. Many perceive the new legislation as an attempt to censor and put limitations on digital creators.
Anurag Kashyap On Ghost Stories Controversy
Anurag Kashyap responded to the complaint by posting an Instagram story. The story is no longer accessible on his page but was seen by MediaNama, which read: “So far, so good… Netflix received a complaint about Ghost Stories. This concludes the story.”
Ghost Stories is an anthology film that includes short films by Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Karan Johar, among others. It was a follow-up to the filmmakers’ 2018 anthology Lust Stories, which was released on New Year’s Day in 2020.
Complaints must, however, be recorded or submitted within 24 hours and answered as soon as possible. This isn’t the first time Netflix India has run into difficulties. They’ve received reactions and criticism in the past for programs like Sacred Games and A Suitable Boy.
