The Union budget for 2023 will be presented to the parliament today, February 1, 2023, and Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s finance minister, has high hopes for the entertainment sector as she does each year. Depending on how it plays out, it might change how you and I watch movies in theatres or consume content on other OTT services. First things first, there has been a lot of debate over ticket prices throughout the years. The entire experience of watching a movie in a theatre has become so lavish that a sizeable percentage of the middle class and lower middle class, or the mass audience, is progressively turning away.

I believe that the entertainment tax should be decreased. Every time a patriotic film is released, the ticket costs are kept cheap or the tax is waived, but for all other films, the ticket prices increase. Every movie should have lower taxes, in my opinion, so that everyone can watch it. Following Covid, our industry is experiencing severe financial pressure. Since OTT has decreased theatre attendance, tax should be decreased. Additionally, the tax on theatre food costs should be addressed because even a water bottle is too expensive and unfair. Food costs are a lot at theatres and should absolutely be decreased. Check out what the women in the entertainment industry have to say about the new Union Budget 2023.

Granting the media sector the status of infrastructure. The media sector wants to be recognised as infrastructure. This will make it simpler for the sector to obtain financial credits and take advantage of government tax breaks. The entertainment sector has to be regarded more seriously because it helps create a wide range of employment opportunities. Daily soap operas and reality TV series are two examples of the entertainment sector’s employment-generating activities.

A source of amusement is movies. The experience of seeing a movie cannot be replaced. However, food items drive up the cost of the movie-going experience and are frequently more expensive than the cost of the tickets. So maybe we can get better deals on the food offered in theatres.

Reduced theatre ticket prices are desirable, and the entertainment tax deduction can make this possible. Attending movies is still a monumental experience, like in the case of Pathaan. Films evoke emotions, and the entertainment sector is one of the largest in India. As a result, we must make it more accessible to the average person.
