When he referred to the SS Rajamouli film RRR as a “Bollywood movie” in his opening monologue, late-night show presenter Jimmy Kimmel, who was presenting at the Oscars for the third time, infuriated some Indian moviegoers. Internet users were quick to point out that this was untrue because RRR is an Indian movie in the Telugu language. The film was up for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category. And when it finally won, composer MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose took the stage to express their gratitude to everyone.
Fans of RRR, however, were not pleased with Kimmel referring to the movie as a Bollywood production. And many of them turned to the internet to express their anger. “RRR is South Indian cinema, a Telugu film, Tollywood,” one commenter said. Not Bollywood, despite what some Oscars viewers may argue! According to a tweet from another user, “India has a diverse film industry for diverse languages… Bollywood is the name of the Hindi film business… Bollywood is more well-known because Hindi is the language that is spoken there the most. The Telugu movie RRR is from the southern region of India.”
Jimmy Kimmel presents RRR:
Ooh… #Oscars just love controversies and conflicts. Referring to #RRR as a Bollywood film even after hearing that the creators are promoting it as an Indian film for months.

“Ooh… #Oscars just adore debates and fights,” another movie buff said. even after learning that its makers have been pushing #RRR as an Indian movie for months. Many are still referring to it as a Bollywood movie. In order to clear up any question regarding which Indian industry the film actually came from. The RRR team, including director Rajamouli, frequently referred to RRR as a Telugu language film.
Well, we hope the Indians forgive Jimmy Kimmel soon. Bollywood diva Deepika Padukone introduced the rendition of the RRR song “Naatu Naatu” during the prestigious event while serving as one of the Oscar presenters. After loud applause and cheers from the audience, an overjoyed and delighted Deepika announced the next act. Along with “Naatu Naatu,” other Indian competitors for the Oscars this year included Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary short “The Elephant Whisperers,” which won the award, and Shaunak Sen’s documentary film “All That Breathes,” which was forced to withdraw from consideration.
