These actors have played a variety of personalities on both the big and small screens, yet many of us are unaware of the secret musical depths they possess. Shweta Basu Prasad:
She appeared in the 2002 film “Makdee” by Vishal Bhardwaj as the twin’s Chunni and Munni and in the 2005 film “Iqbal” by Nagesh Kukunoor as the protective younger sister Khadija. Actress Shweta Basu Prasad is now captivating viewers in films and Zed Theatre teleplays as “Gunehgaar,” “Gudiya ki Shaadi,” and “Kusum Manohar Lele.” She is creative in many different ways, though. She plays the sitar with ease, is well-versed in the history of classical music, and also directed the acclaimed film “Roots,” which featured legends such as Shubha Mudgal, A R Rahman, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.
Saurabh Shukla:
This seasoned actor, screenwriter, cinema, theatre, and National Award winner is well known for his memorable performances in cult classics like “Satya,” “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,” “Jolly LLB,” and “PK.” Devoted theatregoers would also recall him from his important performance in Vijay Tendulkar’s play “Khamosh Adalat Jaari Hai.” He was born into a musical family, albeit that is a little-known fact about him. His father Shatrughan Shukla is an Agra Gharana vocalist, and his mother Jogamaya Shukla was maybe the first Indian woman to play the tabla. The singer Saurabh himself can carry a tune, and in a recent interview, he even sang the Sargam with ease.
Hina Khan:
This charming personality, who has dazzled in reality shows and daytime dramas like “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,” has a strong passion for music. She actually began her career in 2008 as a hopeful vocalist on the reality competition “Indian Idol,” where she finished in the top 30. Despite her busy schedule and recent theatrical debut in the Zed Theatre teleplay “Shadyantra,” she still has a strong passion for music. She still has a deep love for music and can be heard singing along to many of her favourite songs on her social media accounts.
Taaruk Raina:
Did you know that Taaruk Raina sang and performed live in the live-action Indian version of Disney’s “Aladdin”? Or that he was a member of the school choir and has been singing since he was six years old? His YouTube channel, “Jumbo Jutts,” regularly posts entertaining covers of songs by musicians like Ed Sheeran and Adele, so his fans are well aware of his musical talent. He enjoys a variety of musical genres, including heavy metal, rap, rock, and ghazals. His debut solo single, “Narazi,” has gotten positive reviews. He is also a very busy actor; most recently, you may have seen him in the web series “Mismatched 2” and the teleplays “Kaand” and “Dhumrapaan” from Zed Theatre.
Suchitra Pillai:
A well-known name in theatre, television, film, and on-demand programming is Suchitra Pillai. She consistently leaves a lasting impression, whether it is in films like “Dil Chahta Hai,” “Page 3,” and “Fashion,” web series like “Made in Heaven,” or teleplays like “Dance Like a Man” and “Womanly Voices.” She unexpectedly began her career in the show industry as a singer with the 2001 album “Mere Liye,” nevertheless. Her 2011 album “Such is Life” served as more proof of her command of the Indi-pop and rock genres. She is a trained Carnatic vocalist, and you can hear some of her singing on the YouTube channel “ArtistAloud.”
Piyush Mishra:
In Imtiaz Ali’s movie “Rockstar,” veteran actor, singer, lyricist, and playwright Piyush Mishra is remembered for his memorable performance as a corrupt music magnet; nevertheless, in real life, this National School of Drama alumnus is an idealistic exponent of all things poetic. He wrote his first musical score for the student drama “Mashreeki Hoor” at NSD in the 1980s. He is now well-known for his playback singing in films like “Gulaal” as well as for his lyrics in songs like “Black Friday” and “Aaja Nach Le.” His musical endeavour, “Ballimaaraan,” will visit several Indian cities this year.
