Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films are notorious for being fraught with controversy. Do you recall the huge outrage over Padmaavat? And now, just ahead of its release, his planned film is in legal problems again. Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, is the film in question. According to reports, Babu Raoji Shah, Gangubai’s “adopted son,” has filed a lawsuit seeking a halt to the film’s release, claiming that his mother “has been converted into a prostitute” in the film.
While the Supreme Court recently advised the filmmakers to rename Gangubai Kathiawadi, the most current news indicates that the court has dismissed the special leaving appeal against the Sanjay Leela Bhansali flick and has given it the green light for a February 25, 2022 cinema release.

“The entire lawsuit is built on a book based on 2011 that they didn’t consider challenging at the time. ‘Mafia Queens of Bombay’ was the title of the book. In terms of what she has accomplished, our film honours her,” C Aryama Sundaram, a senior lawyer for Bhansali productions, stated during the court sessions.
The Bombay High Court has previously dismissed three other petitions challenging Gangubai Kathiawadi’s discharge. According to reports, there have been protests against the film’s inclusion of Kathiawad and Kamathipura. The argument is that it tarnishes the image of the two cities. On Wednesday, however, the court dismissed the pleas. Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh, and Shantanu Maheshwari will also act in Gangubai Kathiawadi. It is Alia Bhatt’s debut collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
