In the most recent episode of the Amazon Prime Video series Main Monica, Dibyendu Bhattacharya plays the Mangalorean Udupi Shetty Anna, proprietor of the Dancing Bar. The actor, who is well-known for roles in movies like Black Friday, Dev.D, Goal, and others, as well as OTT ventures like Sacred Games, Jamtara, Criminal Justice, Undekhi, Aar Ya Paar, Maharani 2, and Rocket Boys, is now receiving plaudits for his work in this most recent web series. Dibyendu discusses his involvement in the creation of Main Monica.
The actor says, “Main Monica is a distinctive name. Its name is directly derived from the hit song Monica oh my darling by R. D. Burman. In the show, the mysterious beauty Monica, who is the talk of the town, is pursued by people from all over the world. Everybody seems to want her, it seems.”
The writers of the show, Ranjeet Chitrakar, Amber Wasi, and Paromita Ganguly, are also the producers, according to Dibyendu. He adds, “In this manner, both the production and artistic decisions are made in unison. My relationship with them dates back to when they were planning the project in 2018 and first introduced me to Mangu Anna, he continues. Mangu Shetty, also known as Mangu Anna, is a character played by Dibyendu who owns a dance bar.”
Dibyendu Bhattacharya:
He further adds, “Mangu When Anna’s dance bar isn’t doing well, he meets Monica, and as a result, things start to turn around. Mangu has a troubled background as a notorious gangster, but he has since calmed down and decided to operate the dance bar and lead a tranquil life. He is awed by Monica’s beauty and charisma, but he also respects her greatly because she is compared to Goddess Laxmi, who has brought success to his company. He has love, admiration, and amazement for Monica, and his catchphrase “Acche Ghar ki hai Woh” justifies this.”
Mangu is a native of Mangalore and speaks Tullu or Mangalorean. The actor says, “The focus of my preparation was on speaking the language and understanding its gist. I spoke to my Shetty friends who I have a few. Also, I did my own language-related preparation. I had numerous in-depth conversations on Mangu’s character with Amber, Paromita, and Ranjeet regarding little quirks. The character’s history, what he wears, and what he eats. And the specifics really helped me. As this was a type of part I had never done before and was looking forward to, instil authenticity in the character,”
Dibyendu recalls an event that occurred when they were filming outside in an amusing story from the set. He was dressed as Mangu Anna and had one of those days where he was extremely busy at work.
“I was waiting for the shoot to begin while seated in front of a home in Charkop, Kandivali. While passing, a transgender person said, ‘Anna bahot acche lag rahe ho, bahot jach rahe ho,’ with a smile. Bahot tarakki karoge, aap. She blessed me with blessings. I shall never forget this unusual experience that touched my heart,” The actor Dibyendu Bhattacharya concludes.
