Bheed movie review:
In order to avoid using colour, Anubhav Sinha chose to tell the story in black and white. The use of black and white in the film’s aesthetics was primarily done to highlight the startling similarities between the experiences people had during the 1947 India Partition and the social divide that existed during India’s Lockdown. The characters in this story had their lives drastically changed and their colours removed when the country’s border was drawn.
Bheed is too close to the lockdown’s true trauma to be comfortable. Uncomfortable feelings are created by this masterwork about a tangible, recent event in history, as is the traditional purpose of cinema. The ace filmmaker took the brave decision to leave the song-and-dance nautanki. This film Bheed is our very own Schindler’s List. And I don’t simply refer to the black-and-white photography, which in less capable hands would have come off as a bit gimmicky.
The b&w palette is used quite effectively by Sinha and his incredibly eloquent cameraperson (Soumik Mukherjee) to convey the dismal gloom of the situation at the time when all gates were closed to lakhs of migrants trying to return home. This is what distinguishes Sinha as unique. Anubhav Sinha, a filmmaker in India, is the best at portraying the power relations between caste and class in that country. We owe a debt of gratitude to this brilliant storyteller who tells it like it is only for this. Accept it or reject it.
