FRIENDS Faces Backlash On Twitter
In an interview for her new Netflix film, Murder Mystery 2, Jennifer recently noted that “There’s a whole generation of individuals, kids, who are now looking back to episodes of ‘Friends’ and finding them insulting.”
Jennifer stated that many of the objectionable elements in the show were unintentional and that the others might have been handled and planned out better. She continued by saying that there was no such thing as sensitivity then. Jennifer raises an important point, especially because the show debuted in 1994.
Here are the responses on Twitter to Jennifer’s statement.
Fans had a lot of thoughts about the show, and a tweet quoting Jennifer went viral. Many people criticized the show for its lack of racial diversity. Several people claimed that the show negatively depicted the LGBTQ community. Not only were there not many LGBTQ characters, but Carol and Susan were frequently treated as the “punchlines” of jokes whenever they appeared in an episode.

Several also criticized the male characters’ dubious worldviews and called them out for being sexist. Before Jennifer Aniston’s remark went viral, several TikTok users had discussed how troublesome the beliefs of the male characters were. A user compiled an instance that caused controversy. Some of these included Ross noting it is strange for a male to be a nanny. Chandler suggesting there must be something wrong with a woman if she is dining alone.
Many members of Generation Z spoke up to point out that the show debuted in 1994 and should be considered from the perspective of the time.
